Currently Reading

Before I start this list, I ought to attempt to describe the convoluted reading method I’ve developed over the years. Currently, I claim to have 36 books on the go. While this is technically true, it’s also not entirely accurate either.
I love reading and want to read so many books that there was only one way I could manage it, and it’s nuts…
My reading list is split into 2 main categories: the reading pile and the other books
The reading pile actually takes up most of a shelf and holds the bulk of the reading list. Each day, I take the leftmost (or top) book from the shelf and read 50 pages and then finish the chapter or short story that lands on. If there are less than 100 pages to go, I’ll finish the book.
Certain books only get read at specific times, such as those I read to family members. I also have A Song of Ice and Fire Fridays at work and there are books I read at my parents’ house from their collections.
I have so many Terry Pratchett and Star Wars books that these get read in their entirety and have more than one slot on this list.
When I complete a book, that goes back to where it came from, the next book is chosen and goes on the shelf at the bottom of the pile to be read once I’ve gone back through the shelf again.
Also, at the beginning of a month, I’ll exclusively read something completely different in its entirety. As near as I can tell, these books are almost chosen randomly, though I do have some idea beforehand.

New Books

“All Creatures Great And Small
If Only They Could Talk” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Night Of The Living Rerun”
This is an autobiographical account of a newly qualified vet who’s first practice was in a very rural setting.
Current status:
One quarter in.
My wife has a reasonably-sized collection of Buffy books, so I thought, “Why not?” and am now working my way through them. This one contains three stories featuring a brooding man in black…no, not Batman.
Current status:
Just finished Night Of The Living Rerun, so will read this next time round.
“Destiny’s Children:
Coalescent” “Doctor Who
Dead Of Winter”
The first instalment of Stephen Baxter’s Destiny’s Children series. Looks like it’s something to do with the evolution of mankind…or somesuch.
Current status:
I’ve just completed the Manifold series so will begin this next time round.
Arguably my wife’s biggest book collection, just sitting about the house, giving it a go. This one features the 11th Doctor with Amy and Rory and is told as series of letters and accounts.
Current status:
Just started
“Dragon Orb
Firestorm” Father Christmas’s Fake Beard
Reading this to my youngest. It’s got dragons in it.
Current status:
Over halfway.
Got lots of Terry Pratchett, not just Discworld. Just picked this short story collection up the other day..
Current status:
Just completed the fantastic Long Earth series, so will read this next time round.
“Gone:
Light” “Goosebumps:
A Shocker On Shock Street”
Chose this series primarily on the stunning book covers and coloured pages. I’m very much enjoying this Lord Of The Flies meets Heroes series by Michael Grant immensely.
Current status:
Over halfway.
Going through what little horror we have in the house, I thought I’d go through R. L. Stein’s Goosebumps series. We’ve picked up a few since I last read them. Not read this one before.
Current status:
Just read 5, will read another 5 next time.
Ice Hunt Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
Having lent the next Sigma Force book to a friend, I’m currently going through James Rollins’s other works.
Current status:
One quarter in.
From my move novelisation collection, let’s see what James Rollins brings to the least popular film of the franchise..
Current status:
Just started.
The Mammoth Book Of Apocalyptic SF “Quantum Leap:
Random Measures”
Every reading list should include a book of short stories. This one features lost of end of the world stuff – We’re doomed!
Current status:
Just about to start.
Another one of my wife’s collections. Extra adventures for Sam and Al. This time Sam’s leap could jeopardise Al’s love…
Current status:
For the finish.
“Redwall:
Mariel Of Redwall” “Shadowmancer:
The Curse Of Salamander Street”
Yet another one of my wife’s collections. Finished the first trilogy, now onto the second…
Current status:
One third in.
Picked up a few G.P Taylors. This is book 2 of the Shadowmancer series.
Current status:
Almost halfway.
The Case-Book Of Sherlock Holmes Ship Of Strangers
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. Guess whose collection this belongs to? Another collection of the famous consulting detectives exploits.
Current status:
Just finished The Return of Sherlock Holmes and cannot find the matching cover for The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. Might have to scan it.
From my classic sci-fi collection, I try to pick those that can be finished in one day or so. No idea what this one’s about.
Current status:
Just finished the Two-Timers so will read this next time round.
“Skuldugger Pleasant:
Dark Days” “A Song Of Ice And Fire:
Dreams And Dust”
I have the privilege to read to my wife every night. This is book 4 the series. Valkyrie is on the hunt for a specific skull. Some people don’t want her to find it.
Current status:
Just started.
Heard about a certain show on a channel I don’t get being reasonably well received. Can’t watch it, won’t pay for it, so reading it instead.
Current status:
Over halfway.
“StarCraft:
Evolution” “Star Wars:
Children Of The Jedi”
From my game tie-in collection. This chronicles events after the conclusion to Legacy Of The Void. Blimey! I ought to go finish playing that before reading this.
Current status:
Just finished Devil’s Due so will read this next time round, and after I’ve finished the game. If it comes up before I’ve played the game, I’ll probably read Nova: Spectres instead.
With such a large collection that’s still mostly unread, I can’t just have one book from here. Having started with Darth Bane, I’m now here. Pushing on, pushing on…
Current status:
Will read this straighter after I, Jedi.
“Star Wars:
I, Jedi” “Star Wars:
Deceived”
With such a large collection that’s still mostly unread, I can’t just have one book from here. Having started with Darth Bane, I’m now here. Pushing on, pushing on…
Current status:
Just started.
The only Old Republic novel I’ve not read, nor managed to get my hands on. Having to settle with a copy borrowed from the local library.
Current status:
Just started.
“Star Wars:
The Lost Tribe Of The Sith” “Star Wars:
The Old Republic Encyclopaedia”
From my largest book collection and ignoring the LEGACY insult that episode VII has placed on them. Been going through them chronologically. This slot’s for either rereading earlier books or reading newly acquired books I’ve already passed in the chronology.
Current status:
Just finished Shadow Games so will read this next time round.
Every book list should have a non-fiction book in it somewhere. No this isn’t cheating!
Current status:
Read the first chapter.
“Wilde Chase:
The Cult Of Osiris” “The Wind In The Willows:
The Willows And Beyond”
From my action/adventure/thriller collection, I’m going through Andy McDermott’s thrilling Wilde Chase series.
Current status:
Over halfway
Every book collection has some books that are larger than life and not really good for out and about. This one’s a further continuation of the story featuring Mole, Rat, Badger and the badly behaved Toad.
Current status:
Just started.
Rereads
What’s the point of owning lots of books if you don’t read the stuffing out of them? Here’s the books I’m currently rereading:
“Adventure:
South Sea Adventure” Congo
Rereading to my oldest child. Two brothers travel to the Pacific Ocean with the view to collecting some interesting animal species and pearls..
Current status:
Just started.
Been going through my Michael Crichton collection, finishing up with this doozy. Forget the mediocre film, I have fond memories of this book which I’ve not read for 20 years!
Current status: Just started, and remembering it surprisingly well!
“Discworld:
Eric” Fat
Excepting the various diaries and play scripts, I’ve got all of Discworld. Lovingly going through it again. A hapless necromancer attempts to summon a Demon to grant him 3 wishes. What he gets is the failed wizard: Rincewind.
Current status:
Just finished Guards! Guards! so will read this next time round.
Following on from Rob Grant’s hilarious book Incompetence, Fat takes a satirical look at the attitudes towards obesity.
Current status:
Just finished Incompetence so will start this next time round.
“Galactic Milieu:
Intervention” “Left Behind:
Apollyon”
While waiting for this to be picked up by HBO, I’ve been going back through this epic series on the Galactic Milieu. While humanity is discovering mental powers, aliens turn up and see if they’re trustworthy enough to be part of the gang.
Current status:
Just started.
Having ploughed through them quickly the first time, it gave me a lot to think about. Giving it another run. With the 2nd coming been and gone, those left behind have to make important life choices. Swarms of nasty locusts make things really interesting.
Current status:
Just finished Soul Harvest so will start this next time.
Porterhouse Blue The Stainless Steel Rat Saves The World
Something to read at work while the computer’s doing its endless thinking thing. Working my way back through my Tom Sharpe collection. This one looks at college shenanigans.
Current status:
Just started.
Harry Harrison’s personally favourite series, this sci-fi crime adventure whodunit mystery is just plain fun. This time he’s chasing an entity through Earth’s history.
Current status:
Halfway.
“Star Wars: Clone Wars
Endgame” “The X-Files:
Skin”
I’ve a decently large collection of graphic novels, working my way through them. It’s the end of the Clone Wars, Order 66 is in effect.
Current status:
Just started.
Going back through the ol’ X-Files books. Lovely stuff. What could possibly go wrong with a skin graft? Well, this actually.
Current status:
Just finished Antibodies so will start this next time round.
