Currently Reading

Before I start this list, I ought to attempt to describe the convoluted reading method I’ve developed over the years. Currently, I claim to have 36 books on the go. While this is technically true, it’s also not entirely accurate either.
I love reading and want to read so many books that there was only one way I could manage it, and it’s nuts…
My reading list is split into 2 main categories: the reading pile and the other books
The reading pile actually takes up most of a shelf and holds the bulk of the reading list. Each day, I take the leftmost (or top) book from the shelf and read 50 pages and then finish the chapter or short story that lands on. If there are less than 100 pages to go, I’ll finish the book.
Certain books only get read at specific times, such as those I read to family members. I also have A Song of Ice and Fire Fridays at work and there are books I read at my parents’ house from their collections.
I have so many Terry Pratchett and Star Wars books that these get read in their entirety.
When I complete a book, that goes back to where it came from, the next book is chosen and goes on the shelf at the bottom of the pile to be read once I’ve gone back through the shelf again.
Also, at the beginning of a month, if I’m not trying to finish something, I’ll read something in its entirety. As near as I can tell, these books are almost chosen randomly, though I do have some idea beforehand.

New Books

My wife has a reasonably-sized collection of Buffy books, so I thought, “Why not?” and am now working my way through them. This one’s based during Season 1 of the show.
Current status:
Just finished Coyote Moon so not started yet.
Books are left about at work. I pick choice ones up. Handy for when I forget to bring my book in (or finish it). A mad scientist kidnaps two people and injects them with something. People want the stuff.
Current status:
Just started.
A handy book for just dipping into on occasion. This one chronicles the hilarious and inventive ways stupid people have improved the human gene pool by removing themselves from it.
Current status:
Over halfway
Arguably my wife’s biggest book collection, just sitting about the house, giving it a go. This one features the 11th Doctor with Amy and Rory and is told as series of letters and accounts.
Current status:
Just started
From my move novelisation collection, this one I ‘borrowed’ from my brother.
Current status:

Chose this series primarily on the stunning book covers and coloured pages. Actually enjoying this series by Michael Grant immensely.
Current status:
Just finished Fear, so not started yet.
Reading this to my oldest child. He’s very bothered by bees and things that might be bees. Thought this might help him.
Current status:
Over halfway.
Having lent the next Sigma Force book to a friend, I’m currently going through James Rollins’s other works.
Current status:
Just started.
Every reading list should include a book of short stories. This one features zombies. BRRAAAAIINNNS!
Current status:
Halfway
Got lots of Terry Pratchett, not just Discworld. Concluding this marvellous collaboration with Stephen Baxter.
Current status:
Just finished The Long Utopia, so will read when it comes up.
The final instalment of Stephen Baxter’s Manifold series, this one’s more of a short story collection, including extra stories for the series as well as other, stand-alone stories.
Current status:
Halfway
Already have another library book on the go, so why not pick up a second. This adventure has a hero who’s power is that people forget him if they can’t see him. Sounds fun.
Current status:

Reading this to my youngest. Novelisation of the Studio Ghibli film. Two young girls moved to the country with their father in order to be nearer their mother who’s been hospitalised with TB. The girls meet Totoro, a wood spirit who helps them through tough times.
Current status:
One third in.
Another one of my wife’s collections. Extra adventures for Sam and Al. This time Sam’s leap could jeopardise Al’s love…
Current status:
Just finished Search and Rescue so will start next time round.
Yet another one of my wife’s collections. Finished the first trilogy, now onto the second…
Current status:
Just started.
Something to read while at my parent’s house, just what does Spike Milligan think Robin Hood get up to?
Current status:
Just started.
Picked up a few G.P Taylors. This is book 2 of the Shadowmancer series.
Current status:
Just finished Tersias so not started yet.
Guess whose collection this belongs to? Another collection of the famous consulting detectives exploits.
Current status:
Over halfway
I have the privilege to read to my wife every night. Been intrigued by this series for a while. Thought we’d give it a go. A young girl inherits her uncle’s house and enormous fortune. She’s befriended by a detective…who happens to be a living skeleton.
Current status:
Just started.
Heard about a certain show on a channel I don’t get being reasonably well received. Can’t watch it, won’t pay for it, so reading it instead.
Current status:
Just started.
From my game tie-in collection. This chronicles the life and times of Raynor and Tychus before Wings of Liberty.
Current status:
1 third in.
With such a large collection that’s still mostly unread, I can’t just have one book from here. Having started with Darth Bane, I’m now here. Pushing on, pushing on…
Current status:
Just finished Rogue One which pushed in, so will read the whole trilogy in its entirety next time round.
I’ve a decently large collection of graphic novels, working my way through them. This one’s set 1000 years before the Battle of Yavin.
Current status:
Just started.
From my largest book collection and ignoring the LEGACY insult that episode VII has placed on them. Been going through them chronologically. This slot’s for either rereading earlier books or reading newly acquired books I’ve already passed in the chronology.
Current status:
Just finished Choices of One so will read this next time round.
Every book list should have a non-fiction book in it somewhere. No this isn’t cheating!
Current status:
Read the first chapter.
From my classic sci-fi collection, I try to pick those that can be finished in one day or so. This one’s about a man who is accused of having an affair with another man’s wife. Only he is the other man…
Current status:
Having just finished reading Medusa’s Children, I’ve only just chosen this book, so no, I’ve not started it yet.
The house is literally bursting at the seams with many books I’ve not read yet, so of course I’m going to get one from the library. This one is the official sequel to the War of the Worlds. Of course a slight cold isn’t going to stop the Martians for long.
Current status:
Just started.
From my action/adventure/thriller collection, I’m going through Andy McDermott’s thrilling Wilde Chase series.
Current status:
Just started. Really enjoying it.
Every book collection has some books that are larger than life and not really good for out and about. This one’s a further continuation of the story featuring Mole, Rat, Badger and the badly behaved Toad.
Current status:
Just started.
Rereads
What’s the point of owning lots of books if you don’t read the stuffing out of them? Here’s the books I’m currently rereading:
Been going through my Michael Crichton collection, finishing up with this doozy. Forget the mediocre film, I have fond memories of this book which I’ve not read for 20 years!
Current status: Just started, and remembering it surprisingly well!
Excepting the various diaries and play scripts, I’ve got all of Discworld. Lovingly going through it again. The first book in what is arguably the best Discworld series, the Night Watch. Someone’s let a dragon loose on Ankh-Morpork.
Current status:
Just finished Pyramids so will read this in its entirety next time round.
While waiting for this to be picked up by HBO, I’ve been going back through this epic series on the Galactic Milieu. While humanity is discovering mental powers, aliens turn up and see if they’re trustworthy enough to be part of the gang.
Current status:
Just started.
Going through what little horror we have in the house, I thought I’d go through R. L. Stein’s Goosebumps series. We’ve picked up a few since I last read them. This one I first read while on a teacher training placement and it was in the school library.
Current status:
Just finished the first five, will do the next five soon…the first 3 of which have been collected an omnibus edition.
Reread all four Red Dwarf books (c’mon, I need more!), I’ve stuck with a theme and rereading Rob Grant’s other books. Kicking of with the highly satirical Incompetence where anybody, regardless of their level of suitability, can do any job they like. There’s a killer on the loose.
Current status:
Just started, even better than I remember.
Having ploughed through them quickly the first time, it gave me a lot to think about. Giving it another run. With the 2nd coming been and gone, those left behind have to make important life choices.
Current status:
Halfway.
Harry Harrison’s personally favourite series, this sci-fi crime adventure whodunit mystery is just plain fun. This time he’s chasing an entity through Earth’s history.
Current status:
Just started.
Going back through the ol’ X-Files books. Lovely stuff. Patient X on the run, X-Files style.
